Cheddar Valley Rifle Club's 2012 season was overshadowed by the death of prominent member Trevor Paisey after a lengthy battle against cancer.

He will be sorely missed by all at the club and county, as well as his wife Carol, daughter Livi and son Tom, who is following in his father's footsteps in the shooting world.

In a disappointing competition year, Simon Ellis was the club's only medal winner in the county summer individual event, finishing third in Division 3.

Mike Griffin won over 50m and 100m in Division 2 of the Ulster Counties Postal League.

Ruth Bell was runner-up over 100 yards in Division 3, with Keith Thickett third in Division 1's 100-yard class.

A Cheddar team travelled to Brislington for a friendly rapid fire competion which was narrowly lost, while the other regular friendly against Midsomer Norton saw Cheddar regain the shield.

In outdoor events, six members entered the SSBSA Major Hutchinson Open. Thickett was second in X Class, Carolyn Olsen first in A Class and Cliff Simmons second in C Class.

In the X&A pairs contest, Griffin and Thicket finished as runners-up, with Olsen and Bell third. Griffin was also second in the veterans' class.

Olsen was named the top Somerset lady, with Thickett the county's overall top shooter.

Five members entered the Chippenham 50-metre Open, where Thickett was second in Class A and Griffin third.

Carolyn Olsen won Class B and Steve Olsen was third in Class C.

Carolyn Olsen also won the ladies' event, with Griffin and Thickett securing the Open Pairs title.

Griffin took the veterans' crown too, while Carolyn Olsen and Bell claimed the B&C Pairs title as Cheddar won the team of four category.

The indoor winter leagues are well under way and the club are hoping for a successful season in both the Somerset Small Bore Association and Bristol & District competitions.

Cheddar Valley Rifle Club is an established and fully-approved 0.22 calibre target rifle shooting club with their own 25-yard indoor range in the village.

New members are welcome and all equipment needed is provided by the club, which is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 7.30-10pm.

For more information about the club and details of membership criteria, contact the secretary on 01934 518098.
