Mendip Cycling Club's Justin Thomas, from Street, finished joint third in the 2013 Somerset Running Series, sponsored by M5 Glass.

He finished level with Wells City Harrier Graham Goldsmid of Charlton Adam, who has advised Thomas after he took up competitive running a year ago.

Thomas said that the inspiration of experienced athlete Goldsmid, and fellow runner Michelle Blackmore of Mendip Triathlon Club, have helped him to make such quick progress.

He added: "The friendly welcome from the other runners that I've met throughout the series of races I attended – eight out of a possible 17 was needed to qualify in the overall standings – encouraged such a good position in the final standings."

Graham's wife Cath also finished in the top ten of the women's rankings.

Meanwhile, Jon Forsyth took part in the Rempstone Roast duathlon, consisting of a ten-mile off-road bike ride in between a pair of two-mile runs. He finished the race in 1hr 22mins.
