A Wells charity shop has received a designer donation worth almost £1,000, in a surprise gift from a local company.

Barnardo's approached businesses across the area with an invitation to support their annual Christmas tombola.

The charity's shop in Wells High Street was delighted when the Chilcompton headquarters of Mulberry donated a designer satchel worth £925.

Instead of being offered for the tombola, the generous gift is now being offered in a silent auction where customers can offer sealed bids.

The minimum bid is £100, but Barnardo's hopes such a stylish item will raise considerably more to support vulnerable children and young people.

The oversized Alexa satchel is in oak soft buffalo leather and features belt strap and buckle detailing, Mulberry rivet detailing and a Mulberry Tree fabric lined interior, together with a detachable and adjustable leather strap.

The silent auction will run until Saturday December 15. Potential buyers can fill in a form and leave their bids in a sealed envelope, together with their name, address and telephone number.

Barnardo's shop manager, Alison Webber, said: "We were all amazed to receive such a generous donation and are sincerely grateful to Mulberry for their support.

"We hope the silent auction will attract lots of interest from our regular customers, as well as attracting lots of new customers too.

"It could be the perfect Christmas gift for a loved one, or simply a personal treat.

"All of the money raised will support our work with children and young people who are challenged by poverty, abuse, disability and discrimination, helping them to turn their lives around."

Mulberry's charity committee administrator, Rosie Wollacott, said: "Our committee considers donations for all sorts of organisations local to our Somerset factory and London offices, donating frequently to worthy causes.

"The budget for our donations is particularly special as it is mostly funds which have been raised internally from our own employees.

"We hope that this donation really boosts our local Barnardo's fundraising for this Christmas season as well as raising the profile of the Wells shop and the wonderful work of its staff and volunteers."

The Barnardo's shop in Wells is open from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and always welcomes donations of good quality clothes, books, toys and games, as well as offers of help from potential volunteers.
