Wells Cathedral School 2 Mid-Somerset 5

Mid-Somerset kicked off the year with a five-star display in a friendly against a Wells Cathedral School side coached by their own Rob Newman.

The visitors took an early lead when captain Roger Knife thundered a short corner against the backboards. They added a second when Knife collected James Oliver's through ball to round the keeper for an easy tap-in.

Cathedral knocked the ball around well but lacked any real penetration, allowing Mids to grab a third goal when Steve Dowden's cross was converted by Matt Palmer.

With visiting keeper Josh Middleton enjoying a quiet afternoon, Knife completed his hat-trick just before half-time after collecting a fine pass from Mark Salvidge.

As Mids began to tire in the second half, the home side capitalised and scored two quick goals to halve the deficit. This only acted to spur the visitors back into life and Andy Rogers completed the rout late on.

Mids return to league action on Saturday when they entertain Bristol University.
