Mr Derrick Hayes, of Street

The funeral of Derrick "Drummer" Hayes took place on January 11.

The first service took place at Portchester Crematorium, Hampshire, led by the Very Rev Paul Miles-Knight.

Family and friends met at 10.30am to say goodbye to Derrick and then set off for Somerset for a service of remembrance held at 3pm at Leigh Road Methodist Church, Street, to celebrate Derrick's life.

A congregation of more than 200 people gathered for the service led by Mr David Sawyer with Mrs Marilyn Lazenbury playing the organ. Mr Marc Folan and Mr John Folan (nephews) read the lessons and the eulogy was led by Mr David Payne representing the Street Drum and Trumpet Corp and Mrs Dorcas Hewish (Derrick's sister). Derrick was a bandsman nearly all his life and was the bandmaster of the Street Boys Brigade. The band was honoured to be invited to play as a guest band at the Royal Albert Hall in 1971 and this was a very proud moment.

Caroline, Derrick's daughter, then introduced one of his favourite hymns – Jesus Loves Me This I Know – which he would often sing, at times with Marilyn on a Sunday morning in church, or at home or in hospital. The band played Sunset which was Derrick's request and which absolutely resounded throughout the church. When the service concluded the band formed outside the church and marched off triumphantly, playing When The Saints Go Marching In, to the Victoria Club were we all met for light refreshments. A most amazingly memorable day.
