Mrs Helen Mary Sellick (nee Britten), of Evercreech

The funeral service of Helen Mary Sellick, who died peacefully at Elliscombe House Nursing Home on December 10, was held on December 20, at St Peter's Church, Evercreech, followed by interment in the cemetery.

Born in 1919, Helen's early days were spent at Downhead farm, and attending Mrs Baker's school in Batcombe as a weekly boarder. From the age of ten she took a daily bus trip to Ivy House School in Shepton Mallet where she became a promising Girl Guide. Thence, through family connections, her last three school years were spent at Hastings. At home in Downhead she was especially proud that her father owned the first car in the village, and often told the tale of him learning to drive by a few trips along to Slait Hill with the milk lorry driver. No driving tests in those days.

Shorthand and typing were her next acquired skills, aptly applied to a job with Westminster Bank, Wells. Alternate family Sundays were spent walking to Leigh-on-Mendip and East Cranmore churches, and Helen met there the new curate, Claude Sellick, who became her husband in a modest wartime wedding in 1940.

Their first curacy was three years at St John's, Yeovil. Being wartime, she was whisked to safety at Bridgwater for the births of David and Katherine. The next parish, with her husband Claude now a priest, lay to the North of the diocese of Bath and Wells at Compton Dando, followed by Sandford Orcas where Rosamunde arrived. By 1954, they had moved to West Pennard parish, near Glastonbury, where Helen inaugurated a Mother's Union group.

Their next move in 1963 was to Evercreech where the church roof was in need of repair. Fundraising began with Helen organising fetes in the vicarage garden, and together they oversaw the refurbishment of the glorious roof of St Peter's church before retirement in 1975.

Claude sadly died just four years later, aged 69, and Helen stayed in the village moving to the Cedars.

Active involvement in village life continued through the Mother's Union, Meals on Wheels, the Flower Club, Poppy Day collections, and volunteer driving for hospital visits, until advancing years took their toll and Helen moved to residential accommodation, first at South Cary House and then in Elliscombe House Nursing Home.

Helen will be especially missed by her three children, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and all who knew her.
