Yeovil 2 Glastonbury 2

Glastonbury contested two away fixtures last week, with the more creditable performance coming in a Division 3 Central draw against Yeovil.

An early defeat put the Thorns on the back foot, as the remaining three games all lasted more than two hours.

Eventually, Roger Fenton and then captain Stuart March agreed draws, so the outcome of the evening depended on top-board player Tristan West.

Fortunately, despite playing against current Somerset captain Roger Knight, the Glastonbury man was in excellent form. Towards the end of the middle game, West took charge in the centre of the board and achieved victory with a calmly-controlled finish.

Also last week, the Thorns travelled for a tough Division 2 contest at league leaders Taunton.

The highlight of the evening was a brilliant winning fightback by Martin Willis, although there was also a noteworthy draw for a heavily- outgraded Ralph Carver.

Glastonbury's final half- point came from Ben Pyebus, who was making his debut in league chess, but all of these heroics were not enough to prevent the Thorns' second 4-2 defeat of the season to the formidable Taunton sextet.
