Mid-Somerset Ladies 5 Mendip Ladies 2nd 1

Mid-Somerset's Ladies ended 2012 on a high with a five-star showing against league leaders Mendip.

The home side started well, moving the ball around and utilising the space. It was not long before they took the lead, with Kirsten Vowles finishing off a good move. Mids continued to press and Vowles pounced again for her second.

The hosts were not having it all their own way but Elainna O'Teare was imperious in goal, with some truly outstanding saves. Eventually, though, Mendip got a reward for their efforts as they cut the deficit to 2-1.

This sparked Mids into life and Vowles capitalised on a parried save to complete her hat-trick and give her side a two-goal cushion at the break.

A tactical reshuffle saw the home side dominate the rest of the game. They kept possession for long periods and worked the ball around well.

The pressure led to a number of short corners, but it was from a long corner that the next goal eventually came, with Mel Maskell smashing past the goalkeeper. Di Grove then rounded off the scoring with a crisp strike at the death.

Player of the match: Mel Maskell.

Frys 3rd 0 Mid-Somerset Ladies 2nd 3

Carly Dutton scored twice as Mid-Somerset recorded an emphatic victory at Frys.

Mids started confidently and controlled the play, with Hilary McNeill, Ellie Massey and Leanne Lambert pushing the ball into the D for early shots from Dutton and Poppy Wilson. Dutton eventually opened the scoring following a pass from Becky Dowden

Frys responded but goalkeeper Mary Dowds dealt with the pressure, while Lambert and Wilson impressed as the visitors hunted a second goal before the break.

Mids upped their game in the second half, with Massey and McNeill to the fore, while Fry's own attacks were broken down by the defence of Terri Wipfler, Lorna Wickham, Tracey James, Amy Sawyer and Jojo Cranwell.

Wipfler picked up several loose balls to create more chances for the forwards and the second goal Mids had threatened arrived via a powerful Dutton strike.

Resolute defending kept out Frys when they won a series of short corners and the visitors again pushed forward, allowing Wilson to complete the rout.
