Former Street footballer Ben Nugent has been earmarked as a future Cardiff City captain after helping the Bluebirds to the top of the npower Championship table when he bagged the first goal in their 2-1 weekend win at Barnsley.
Nugent, who turns 20 today, was playing Toolstation League football for the Cobblers just two years ago but marked his incredible rise with a goal on his first senior start during Saturday's win at Oakwell. The centre-back had made his debut as a substitute the previous week against Middlesbrough.
Nugent was expected to keep his starting place for Tuesday night's trip to Derby and Cardiff boss Malky Mackay sees him as a future club captain after an impressive start to his club career.
"Ben has captained our reserves at a very young age," said Mackay. "Since day one of pre-season he has just kept improving.
"He desperately wants to learn and that's nice combination to have.
"There's a lot of potential there. It's early days, but from what I've seen – and I was a centre-back and I've seen a lot of youngsters coming through – if Ben keeps progressing he will probably end up captaining Cardiff City one day."
Nugent originally joined Cardiff as an academy player, before signing his first professional contract in April.
