Four people were injured and two threatened when a group of youths carried out drunken attacks in Wells in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information following the attacks on passers-by in the Wells Cathedral Green area.

Four people were assaulted. A 20-year-old man was attacked on Vicars Close and left with two black eyes as a result of the assault. Police arrested an 18-year-old, who has been questioned and released on bail.

A 44-year-old man was attacked at Wells Market Place. He had two black eyes and a cut to his cheek. A 19-year-old man has been arrested, questioned and released on bail.

There was a second attack in the Market Place on a 20-year-old man. He had facial bruising and two black eyes as a result. Police arrested a 20-year-old suspect on the night in connection with the attack, who has been questioned and released on bail.

The fourth victim of the spate of attacks was a 21-year-old man who was hit on the head on St Thomas Street.

The suspect is the same as in the assault on the younger man in the Market Place.

One of the victims was a member of the Vicar's Choral, attacked on his way home.

The victims also included a father and son from Wells.

The cathedral administrator Dr Paul Richards said: "We are distressed that this has happened.

"We will do all we can to help the police deal with the issues."

Two other men on their way home were also stopped by the youths but the police intervened.

One works as a barman at a Wells city centre pub and had been on his way home with a friend after spending the evening at the pub.

Chief Inspector Richard Corrigan said: "A group of youngsters affected by drink were involved in a number of assaults.

"Arrests were made on the night and police are appealing for more information."

Police received reports of a disturbance involving a large group of people.

An ambulance was called to treat the injured.

Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called to a number of incidents near to the Cathedral Green area during the early hours of Saturday, September 29.

"Two men and a woman have been arrested in relation to these incidents.

"Inquiries are ongoing and it is anticipated that more arrests will be made."

Police are keen for anyone who may have witnessed any of these incidents to call 101 and provide any information to PC 2560 Sharon Dawkins of Wells Police Station.
